Album Review KATATONIA Sky Void of Stars

'Sky Void of Stars' has all the ingredients that make up a very good modern Katatonia album. The second album in a row to be entirely written solo by Jonas Renkse (and with Anders Nystrom out of the touring line-up for about a year now, it really does look like a solo project), it's full of introspective mid-paced and darkly polished alternative rock songs.

Review of the new Katatonia album 'Sky Void of Stars' Like many bands hit by the pandemic over the last few years, Sweden's Katatonia were affected in the early period of 2020. Their last album 'City Burials' was released in April 2020 just as things were beginning to turn downwards.

KATATONIA Sky Void of Stars (Album Review)

Of course, Sky Void of Stars wouldn't be Katatonia without featuring jagged, gripping guitar runs against downcast incantations. While a few waning minor key lines tease about in early cuts ("Austerity," "Birds"), it's really mid-album stunner "Impermanence" that dims the lights to reveal the unshakeable fog that defines the.

Those dynamics provide the bedrock for how Sky Void Of Stars works so well. When the crossover gene isn't as prevalent (though not completely absent, mind), Katatonia prove spellbinding in plenty of other ways, all circling back to how enormous they sound. That can come in the hair-in-a-wind-tunnel shredding of Impermanence, but it's mostly the richness in composition, and how sonic darks.

KATATONIA Sky Void Of Stars 2LP Clarity Records

Sky Void Of Stars reaches a startling emotional peak with Impermanence. A glacial ballad with a heart of purest doom, it drifts majestically along until a rapturous, old-school guitar solo bursts through the clouds of reverb like a lightning bolt. It's one of the most powerful things Katatonia have ever released.

Atrium is one of the catchy - esque tracks on Sky Void of Stars. The drumming gives the uplifting beats with the cleaner cut vocals on this track - it almost feels as if the centre hearing is for Daniel's skills behind the kit and the keys of Anders - which give this track a more futuristic vibe and a range for the listener to explore newer elements with Katatonia .

Seduced by more dark rituals of doubt. Release Date: 20th January 2023. Label: Napalm Records. Format: Vinyl / CD / digital. Katatonia has always found beauty in darkness. In the loosest of terms, Katatonia are still a metal band, even if their earliest recordings wouldn't have suggested they'd evolve into the direction they've taken on Sky Void of Stars.
